In 2016, the Chinese Government pledged to contribute $200 million to the United Nations over a ten year period.
The United Nations Peace and Development Trust Fund (UNPDF) was established to channel these earmarked funds to specific projects in coordination with the UN.
The UNPDF is divided into two sub-funds: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Sub-Fund and The Secretary-General's Peace and Security Sub-Fund.
Approved in 2023 by UNPDF, a $1,200,000 grant under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Sub-Fund was allocated for a project to enhance capacity for infrastructure planning and mobilizing investments in El Salvador, specifically to address three areas: 1) a lack of capacity to identify and plan sustainable, resilient, inclusive, and bankable projects; 2) unstandardized guidelines at the country level (i.e., standards and accreditations) for building sustainable and resilient infrastructure; and 3) misalignment of public and private finance with sustainable infrastructure projects that are developed.
In addition, the project will facilitate knowledge exchange through South-south cooperation between El Salvador and other countries with similar sustainable infrastructure objectives and challenges, including two countries that UNEP is working with, Chile and Rwanda. The project's duration is scheduled for May 2024 - May 2027.
The implementing entity is the UN Environment Programme.
Collaborating partners include UN Resident Coordinators and Country Teams, UN Office of Project Services, and the UN Partnership for Action on Green Economy (PAGE) partner agencies (ILO, UNDP, UNITAR, UNIDO), UNDRR, UN-HABITAT.
Enhancing capacity for sustainable infrastructure planning and finance Loan applications and disbursements are still being received and processed as the projects continue to evolve. Ongoing monitoring and evaluation are in place to ensure project continuity.
