Grant Description

Huadian Overseas Investment signs MoU to develop Tumarín Hydroelectric Power Plant On October 17, 2023, the Government of Nicaragua signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China Huadian Overseas Investment Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of the Chinese state-owned enterprise China Huadian Corporation, to explore the design, financing, and construction of the Tumarín Hydroelectric Power Plant.

The Tumarín project, located in Apawás in the municipality of La Cruz de Río Grande (South Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region), was initially approved in 2009 under a Brazilian consortium involving Eletrobras and Queiroz Galvão. However, the project stalled in 2016 due to financial and legal issues faced by the Brazilian partners.

The plant is designed to generate 253 MW of renewable electricity, making it the largest energy infrastructure project in Nicaragua's history.

Under the new MoU, Huadian will conduct feasibility and technical studies to determine the viability of financing and implementing the project.
