Grant Description

In 2016, the Chinese Government pledged to contribute $200 million to the United Nations over a ten year period.

The United Nations Peace and Development Trust Fund (UNPDF) was established to channel these earmarked funds to specific projects in coordination with the UN.

The UNPDF is divided into two sub-funds: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Sub-Fund and The Secretary-General's Peace and Security Sub-Fund.

Approved in 2016 and implemented between April 2017 to December 2017, USD $500,000 was allocated from the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Sub-Fund to provide affordable health care and educational opportunities to primarily Afghan refugees in Iran.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) helped implement the project, along with the Bureau for Aliens and Foreign Immigrants’ Affairs (BAFIA), Ministry of Interior, Iran Health Insurance Organization (IHIO), Ministry of Health and Medical Education (MoHME), and the Ministry of Education (MoE).

The program expanded access to Universal Public Health Insurance (UPHI) for 112,735 refugees.

Additionally, it strengthened primary health care services for 4,972 refugees living in the Saveh Settlement in Markazi Province.

Via the same program fund, the UNHCR helped the Ministry of Education construct 11 primary and secondary schools in areas hosting high numbers of vulnerable Afghan refugees.

It is estimated that the school in the city of Dilijan in the Markazi province will serve a population of up to 800 students from the refugee and host community.
