Grant Description

In 2016, the Chinese Government pledged to contribute $200 million to the United Nations over a ten year period.

The United Nations Peace and Development Trust Fund (UNPDF) was established to channel these earmarked funds to specific projects in coordination with the UN.

The UNPDF is divided into two sub-funds: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Sub-Fund and The Secretary-General's Peace and Security Sub-Fund.

Approved in 2016 and implemented between April 2017 to December 2018, USD $1,272,217 was allocated from the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Sub-Fund to strengthen developing countries' capacities in boosting economic growth, social inclusion, and environmental protection in alignment with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) helped implement this project.

The project included the countries of Fiji, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Micronesia (Federated States of), Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Timor-Leste, Tonga, Vanuatu, and Viet Nam.

It facilitated knowledge exchange, integrated policy development, and improved reporting via Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs). Partners involved included the ASEAN Secretariat, FAO, AU, COMESA, and regional organizations like CROP, PIFS, and SPC. The project had two main components.

The first component was led by UNDESA and resulted in the 2017 ECOSOC Special Meeting on SDG 9, held on May 31, 2017 in New York, following preparatory events in Senegal and Zimbabwe.

The second component, co-led by UNDP and UNDESA, produced a regional synthesis report launched at the 2018 Asia Pacific Forum in Bangkok and provided technical assistance for SDG planning in the countries involved.

Support included the integration of SDGs into national development plans, VNR preparation, and regional workshops in Fiji and Samoa for Pacific Island nations scheduled to present VNRs in 2019 and 2020.
