In 2014, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), through its Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XIEG), began implementing a grant-funded project to establish a Bishkek branch of the Research Center for Ecology and Environment of Central Asia (RCEECA).
The project aimed to strengthen ecological research cooperation between China and Kyrgyzstan, with a particular focus on mountainous ecosystems, water resource management, and environmental degradation.
The Bishkek branch became one of three core national sub-centers under the RCEECA umbrella, alongside branches in Almaty (Kazakhstan) and Dushanbe (Tajikistan).
It supports joint research between Chinese and Kyrgyz scientists on regional climate change, glacial melt monitoring, soil erosion, and sustainable water use.
The facility also serves as a platform for environmental data sharing, technical training, disaster early warning systems, and science-based policymaking. Approximately RMB 3.197 million was allocated by CAS to fund the construction and outfitting of the Bishkek facility.
This investment covered laboratory infrastructure, scientific equipment, and support for collaborative fieldwork and training activities. The center was completed and operational by 2015 and remains active as of 2024.
1. The Bishkek branch of the Research Center for Ecology and Environment of Central Asia (RCEECA) was funded by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and has been operational since at least 2021, based on official CAS and RCEECA websites.
