On February 28, 2023, the Segoditshane River dredging project in Gaborone began with the help of the Chinese Enterprise Association and the Chinese Embassy in Botswana.
The project would alleviate the city's drainage problems during the rainy season by removing fine sand and other materials that is carried by running water and deposited in the river. The project was expected to achieve completion within two weeks, and on March 14, 2023 the project was completed.
The scope of construction for this project was within 50 meters upstream and downstream of the Gaborone Segoditshane Bridge. The average width of the river is about 30 meters, and the depth of siltation in the river is about 1 meter. The contribution of the Chinese Enterprises Association in Botswana is captured via Record ID #103321.
The Chinese Embassy's contribution is captured via this record.
The help of the two Chinese entities was said to have saved the Gaborone council BWP 1.1 million, although their specific monetary contributions are unknown.
