Grant Description
On May 23, 2023, the Chinese government, in coordination with Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Fisheries, began distributing free kerosene to fishermen at Panadura Fishery Port.
The initiative provided a total of 29,059 fishing boats across 15 fishery districts including Colombo, Kalutara, Matara, Hambantota, Kalmune, Batticaloa, Mulathivu, Trincomalee, Kilinochchi, Mannaram, Puttalam, Halata and Gampaha, with 1,825,575 liters of kerosene at 75 liters of kerosene to a boat by 96 fuel stations nationwide.
The purpose of this project is to support local fishermen through fuel subsidies.

- Distribution of Kerosene provided by the Chinese Government to the fishermen is commenced. Chinese Ambassador states that the nets, boats, and financial aid to build houses will be provided to Fishermen.
- The distribution in the second phase of petroleum provided by the Chinese government as a relief to the fishermen will start from October according to the instructions of the Minister of Fisheries Douglas Devananda.
- Donation of fuel by the Chinese Government
- China-aided fuel distributed to fishermen in Sri Lanka Loan applications and disbursements are still being received and processed as the projects continue to evolve. Ongoing monitoring and evaluation are in place to ensure project continuity.
