Grant Description

In 2019, China Merchants Port Group launched the "China Merchants Silk Road Charity Village" project. The goal of this project was to select eligible poor villages and help them develop.

In 2021, after several field visits and evaluations, China Merchants Port Group selected Kenda Village, about 50 kilometers away from Hambantota Port, as the village to support.

China Merchants Charity Foundation, Hambantota International Port Group Co., Ltd. (HIPG), and Colombo International Container Terminal Co., Ltd. provided over LKR 60 million in funding to build a community center, health center, agriculture center, playground facilities as well as provide financial assistance to the village temple.

On May 27, 2022, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for the "Love Village" Project in Kendagasmankada, Sri Lanka. The project was completed on April 23, 2023.

The project also cooperated with the Sri Lanka Agricultural University and related training institutions to provide agricultural technology training to local villagers, assist in the export of their agricultural products, realize the development of the industrial chain, and truly "teach people to fish".

This is the second rural revitalization project carried out by China Merchants Group in Sri Lanka, the first being the "Love Village" project in Panila, Sri Lanka.

The exact value of the donation is unknown, but was reported as over LKR 60 million. AidData assumes that each donor provided an equal contribution to the grant, for an estimated LKR 20 million each (LKR 60 million / 3 = LKR 20 million)
