From April 4 to April 12, 2023, a Chinese medical team carried out approximately 120 free eye surgeries in Nouakchott, Mauritania as part of the long-running “March of Light” campaign.
The visiting team, which included Chinese ophthalmologists led by the Director General of the Eye Hospital in Kherdan, worked in close coordination with the Mauritanian National Medical Center. Along with providing the surgeries, the Chinese medical team also provided training to the Mauritanian staff.
The surgeries came with a donation of supplies (#105959) and were part of a broader initiative to reduce preventable blindness in Mauritania, particularly from cataracts, and are part of the 55th-anniversary celebration of Mauritania-China medical cooperation.
Since 2015, the “March of Light” program has enabled hundreds of Mauritanians to regain their vision free of charge.
1. Source 209842 declares that 150 cataract surgeries were conducted following the donation, whereas the rest of the cited sources state it was 120 surgeries. AidData relies on the information provided by official donor and recipient sources.
