Grant Description

On March 19, 2023, Guizhou Province deployed its second medical team to Honiara, Solomon Islands, as part of an ongoing healthcare assistance initiative.

The team consists of eight members, all from the Medical School and Affiliated Hospital of Guizhou Medical University (貴州醫科大學及附屬醫院).

The new team worked briefly alongside the first medical team before a formal handover of responsibilities on March 22, 2023, when the first team completed its mission and returned to China (see Record ID#101947).

During their 12-month mission, the second Chinese Medical Team (CMT) provided services at the National Referral Hospital (NRH) and conducted extensive clinical outreach to Central, Malaita, and Western Provinces.

Their activities included over 11,000 patient consultations, 127 urological surgeries, and more than 7,000 acupuncture treatments.

They also carried out 283 lifesaving procedures, delivered nearly SBD 700,000 worth of medicines, and led 179 medical training sessions for local healthcare workers. The team offered specialized care in cardiology, nephrology, urology, acupuncture, and diagnostics.

Beyond their base at NRH, the CMT conducted outreach clinics in Tulagi (Central Province, July 17–19), Kiluúfi Hospital (Malaita Province, December 4–8), and Munda and Noro (Western Province, December 17–22), reaching more than 1,000 rural residents.

Services provided included chronic disease screening, specialist consultations, electrocardiograms, and free distribution of medications. Medical Superintendent Dr.

Janella Solomon commended the team’s sub-specialist support and described their collaboration with provincial hospitals as a valuable clinical partnership. The second team concluded its mission on March 23, 2024, and was succeeded by the third Chinese Medical Team.
