On April 11, 2023, a five-member medical team from Nanfang Hospital in Guangdong Province arrived at the National Referral Hospital (NRH) in Honiara, Solomon Islands.
The team, consisting of three urologists and two anesthesiologists, performed eight intensive urological surgeries—primarily plasmakinetic resections of the prostate—on elderly male patients suffering from chronic urinary conditions. The procedures averaged 3–4 hours each and addressed a long-standing backlog of urology cases.
During their visit, the team also delivered lectures to NRH medical staff on urological treatments, donated specialized medical equipment, and collaborated closely with local surgeons, including providing one-on-one training to Dr. Augustine Melly.
Their work was praised by the NRH superintendent and Ministry of Health officials, who acknowledged the visit as part of a broader China–Solomon Islands health cooperation MoU. The team departed the Solomon Islands on Saturday, April 15, 2023.
