Since 1963, the Chinese Government has been dispatching medical teams to Algeria. Hubei Province is responsible for sending the teams.
On September 24, 2023, the Chinese Government dispatched the 28th Chinese medical team to Algeria for a two-year mission.
The team consists of 81 members from major hospitals across Hubei Province, including Tongji Hospital and Union Hospital affiliated with Huazhong University of Science and Technology, as well as Wuhan University’s Renmin and Zhongnan Hospitals. The team officially arrived in Algeria on September 25 and deployed across eight provinces the following day.
Specialties represented include obstetrics, gynecology, anesthesiology, pediatrics, orthopedics, surgery, acupuncture, and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
As of August 2024, the 28th medical team has treated over 10,000 outpatient obstetric cases, nearly 5,000 deliveries, and 1,200 cesarean sections within the Ain Defla sub-team alone. The team has handled over 360 emergency obstetric referrals in 2024 without a single maternal death.
In May 2024, the team launched the "Yangtze–Sahara Medical Forum," a rotating cross-team professional exchange initiative to improve clinical collaboration, share case studies, and promote innovation. Several teams, including the Setif sub-team, have published peer-reviewed research in international medical journals.
