On August 2, 2023, a ceremony was held for the donation of 4.6 tons of medical supplies handed over by the Charge d'Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Sudan, Zhang Xianghua, on behalf of the Chinese Government to the Government of Sudan.
The donation was received by the Deputy Minister of Social Development of the Sudanese Federation, Jamal Nir, and included medical equipment, consumables, and medicine for malaria and other diseases.
The supplies were originally intended to be donated to Sudanese hospitals by the 37th Chinese Medical Team (captured in Record ID#101223), but due to the outbreak of violent conflict in April 2023, they were forced to evacuate before the supplies could be handed over and supplies were stuck in Port Sudan.
The donation was intended to support Sudan during its conflict.
1. Some sources state that the Chinese Government donated 30 tons of medical supplies ('30 طنا من المساعدات الطبية من الصين للسودان'). AidData has chosen to code the donation as 4.6 tons of medical supplies based on the greater quantity of official sources supporting this claim. This issue requires further investigation.
