On March 30, 2023, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China (MFA) donated RMB 2 million (approx.
USD 282,468) in humanitarian assistance to Matanzas Province, Cuba, to support post-disaster recovery after the August 2022 oil tank explosion at the Supertanker Base.
The assistance package consisted of RMB 1 million in cash and RMB 1 million in food supplies, including cooking oil and canned/preserved meat. The aid was distributed across 23 educational and health institutions in the province. The handover ceremony was attended by Chinese Ambassador Ma Hui and provincial government officials.
The donation is part of a broader set of Chinese assistance packages provided to Cuba in response to the Matanzas explosion.
MFA official sources emphasized this grant as an example of “South-South solidarity” and “China’s friendship with Cuba in times of hardship.”
