During Nepali Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal’s official state visit to China (September 23–30, 2023), the Chinese side agreed to support Nepal’s request to supply electricity to remote villages in northern border regions.
This cooperation will be carried out by the Government of the Xizang Autonomous Region of the People’s Republic of China, which shares a border with several Nepali provinces.
The two sides signed a framework agreement on energy cooperation, under which rural electrification efforts—including cross-border grid extension—were identified as a potential area of support.
As of late 2023, implementation was expected to begin in select villages, but details on coverage and delivery modalities remain limited.
