On April 3, 2023, the hernia surgery project between Tianjin People's Hospital in China and Centre Hospitalier Régional de l’Estuaire de Melen (CHR Melen) in Libreville, Gabon, was launched.
The initiative was part of a formal hospital twinning agreement signed during a ceremony attended by Chinese Ambassador Li Jinjin and Gabon’s Minister of Health, Guy Patrick Obiang Ndong.
According to the plan, experts from China, along with the 24th Chinese medical team and local Gabonese doctors, aimed to perform 30 tension-free hernia repair surgeries within 1–2 weeks. However, they exceeded this goal by completing over 40 surgeries in just a few days. This project utilizes advanced tension-free hernia repair techniques.
The surgical meshes used were provided free of charge by the Chinese side, which can significantly reduce the postoperative recurrence rate.
Additionally, local doctors participating in the project received hands-on training, allowing them to learn new techniques and enhance their skills.
