On 19 September 2023, the Chinese Embassy in Jamaica awarded the Chinese Ambassador’s Scholarship to eight students of Caribbean Maritime University (CMU) at a ceremony on the university’s Palisadoes Park campus in Kingston.
Each scholar received ≈ J $200,000 toward 2023/24 tuition and related expenses, bringing the total grant to about J $1.6 million (≈ US $10,400, estimated).
The programme is part of the embassy’s annual Ambassador Scholarship scheme, which supports outstanding Jamaican undergraduates in maritime studies and other STEM fields and has been running at CMU since 2018.
Ambassador Chen Daojiang presented the awards alongside CMU leadership and reiterated China’s commitment to human-resource development in Jamaica’s blue-economy sector.
