On April 29, 2022, China unveiled its intent to sponsor a disaster relief fund for several Caribbean countries.
The "China-Caribbean Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Fund" was announced during a virtual summit between Chinese Foreign minister Wang Yi and his counterparts from nine local countries - Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago.
The total amount granted was USD $1,000,000.
As part of these efforts, on December 17, 2022, CARPHA (Caribbean Public Health Agency) was the recipient of a US$50,000 grant, through the CARICOM Secretariat, to purchase laboratory equipment and supplies.
On November 24, 2023, CDEMA (Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency) was the recipient of a US$100,000 grant from China as part of a wider US$ 1.0 million support package for CARICOM Member States.
