From September 2023 to March 2025, the China Foundation for Rural Development (CFRD), a Chinese NGO, established a partnership with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) for a project called "Support to Schools and Communities in Remote Areas for Pandemic Prevention and Green Recovery in Nepal" (SSPP-GR).
The project was financed by China's Global Development and South-South Cooperation Fund. The total budget for the project was USD $1.55 million, and it was implemented by CFRD.
The project was one of fifty in the first round of the Chinese Global Development Initiative's practical cooperation projects.
The purpose of the grant was to help enhance preparedness for pandemics and natural disasters, while improving access to quality education..
The program would benefit 32 schools across 9 Municipalities in Rautahat and Sarlahi District in Madhesh Province, Nepal by improving sanitary conditions and providing goods like desks, tables, and book racks to enhance the learning environment. In addition, the grant provided essential school and household materials to over 15,000 students and 7,500 families.
The South-South Cooperation Assistance Fund is a partnership between the Government of China and UNDP to provide 17 million in support of disaster recovery and reconstruction efforts in Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Antigua and Barbuda, and the Commonwealth of Dominica.
