Grant Description

On November 15, 2022, the chairman of the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), Luo Zhaohui, signed a memorandum of understanding with the Nepali ambassador to China, Bishnu Pukar Shrestha, for the provision of 800 million RMB for the execution of developmental projects to be agreed upon by both parties.

One of the projects identified to be supported by this grant was a feasibility study for the Nepal-China Railway (see AidData Record ID #102130), for which an earlier memorandum had been signed on March 20, 2022.

Other projects referenced at the time of signing of the MoU which may receive funding include: (1) Phase II of the Kathmandu Ring Road Project (see AidData Record ID #34420 for Phase I), (2) the Tokha-Chhahare Tunnel (see AidData Record ID #88760 for a Chinese-funded feasibility study), (3) Syabrubesi-Kerung road expansion, (4) the construction of new wing at Bir Hospital in Kathmandu, (5) continuing the reconstruction of Basantapur Durbar (see AidData Record ID #53714 for earlier reconstruction support), (6) the continuation of the Nuwakot Durbar reconstruction project (see AidData Record ID #71774 for earlier reconstruction support), (7) a dry port on the Nepal-China border, (8) continuing the development of Kodari Highway (see AidData Record ID #71791 for the first section of this project), (8) construction of the Nepal-China cross-border transmission project, (9) building a bridge in Humla, and (1) supplying Nepal with chemical fertilizers while establishing a feasibility study for the construction of a chemical fertilizer plant.
