In 2011, SinoHydro signed a contract with the Iranian government to build the Bakhtiari Dam (Persian: سد بختیاری) at a cost of USD 2 billion (see Record ID#41492). The project was planned to be funded by SinoHydro as foreign direct investment.
In 2012, Iran awarded the contract to Khatam-al Anbiya Construction Headquarters (Persian: خاتمالانبیا قرارگاه سازندگی) and the Chinese investment was cancelled.
On March 25, 2013, Iran Water and Power Resources Development Company (Persian: شرکت توسعه منابع آب و نیروی ایران) began construction on the dam. When completed it will be the tallest dam in the world.
In a July 2021 interview, the governor of Lorestan province stated that the dam was being constructed by Ab Niru (Persian: شرکت آب نیرو) and that the project was funded, finalized, and securitized by China. As of February 2024 the project was waiting to obtain permits for Chinese finance.
