On April 19, 2022, Banaadir Maternity and Child Hospital held a celebration for the re-opening of its operating wing, which was renovated and upgraded with grant funds from the Chinese government. Chinese Ambassador Fei Shengchao attended the ceremony with Somali high officials.
The renovation and upgrade more specifically included the installation of three major surgery rooms, four manual operation beds, operating lamps, and other equipment.
The operating theater, following the upgrade, reportedly now has the capacity for 200 obstetric and gynecological surgeries to be performed each month.
The project was reportedly related to promises made by President Xi Jinping at the 8th Forum on China-Africa Cooperation in November 2021 to "deep[en] practical cooperation" including in the health sector. The renovations took four months to complete, and operations resumed in February 2022. This indicates renovation work began October 2021.
The Banadir Maternity Hospital was originally constructed with Chinese government grant funds in the 1970's and has received several batches of material donations by the Chinese government, and visits by Chinese medical teams, since.
