Grant Description

Porpoise Power is a revolutionary tidal power equipment start-up, with a concept originating from original research from Oxford University, Biomechanics Department. The technology solution builds on the way fish swim at varying speeds, with a fin design that can operate in slow tidal flows and shallow waters.

Working with Marine Energy Wales and the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult, this project will test various iterations of the design in the Marine Energy Test Area in Pembroke Dock. The aim is to prove the efficiency of the design in this representative environment, comparing that to the computer model. From this, we aim to be able to provide a renewable, reliable power source both for individual businesses (e.g. marinas, fish farms) and at scale with tidal arrays.

Wales is already at the forefront of tidal energy developments and Pembroke itself is a strong Marine Energy Cluster, with the supply chain experience in building and deploying prototype devices, making this an important location for our testing at this stage of development

Going forward It is our aim to have manufacturing based in South Wales, and to implement our first array at Morlais, off Anglesey.
