On February 18, 2022, Eritrea welcomed the 15th medical team sent by China to provide free medical care.
They undertook routine and critical care diagnosis and treatment in more than 10 specialties including internal medicine, general surgery, neurosurgery, urology, critical care medicine, orthopedics, ultrasound, imaging, anesthesia and traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture in 3 hospitals in Asmara.
In December of 2022, 5 of the team’s doctors assisted the first spinal surgery in Eritrea.
China has successfully sent 15 medical teams to Eritrea of 222 members since sending the first medical team in September 1997.
Sending medical experts to Eritrea is an important measure for China to implement the China-Africa Cooperation Forum Action Plan, as was outlined on September 3-4 at the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation.
On April 18, 2023, the Ministry of Health of Eritrea and the China Chamber of Commerce in Eritrea held farewell activities for the team, congratulating the team on the successful completion of their mission and wishing them a safe return to China.
The Minister of Health of Eritrea Amina specially awarded honorary certificates to the 18 members of the 15th medical team.
Ambassador Cai Ge, Minister Amina, and representatives of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce presented each team member with a certificate of honor from the Chinese Chamber of Commerce and a thank-you letter with the seal of all Chinese institutions in Eritrea.
