Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is a solid-state joining technique used in industries such as aerospace, automotive, defence and shipbuilding. FSW offers many benefits compared to traditional welding methods, but ensuring high-quality welds currently relies on non-destructive post-weld inspections, a time-consuming and potentially expensive process.
This project will address this challenge by demonstrating the feasibility of deploying Open Standard 5G and IoT sensors in an industrial setting enabling real-time, data-driven quality assurance in FSW.
By demonstrating the feasibility of OpenRAN 5G and IoT technology, this project has the potential to demonstrate quality assurance in an industrial environment for a novel, sustainable joining process, leading to significant improvements in production efficiency, cost savings, and overall weld quality.
