Grant Description

Pre-clinical trials for anticancer drugs rely on measurement of grafted tumours before, during, and after the experimental treatment to ascertain whether the anticancer drug can reduce tumour volume or eliminate it altogether. The measurement of tumour dimensions (length and width) is periodically carried out manually by a technician using vernier callipers.

Tumours typically have complex shapes, and the measurement process is open to a large degree of dimensional interpretation and skill. The dimensions are translated to volume estimates using simple equations which assume regular shapes. The entire process is cumbersome, time consuming and highly prone to inaccuracies and errors.

It is not uncommon for such volume estimates to vary by factors \>3 between different measurers. Research organisations compensate for these acknowledged issues by using higher numbers of animals than are necessary, and by specifying an assigned individual to obtain all measurements throughout the evaluations -- sometimes lasting longer than 6 weeks.

Verinnogen has developed a unique 3D surface profiling technology based on the concept of "pin impression". The Verinnogen device directly measures and calculates tumour volume with higher accuracy than callipers and with negligible inter-operator variation. The hand-held, opto-electronic device captures height and shape information of the tumour in near real-time with an automated process for calculating and recording the volume measurements.

By providing a quick, accurate and easy-to-use replacement for callipers, Verinnogen will help improve translational cancer research, as well as drive reduction to the number of animals used in research.

Extensive testing in preclinical cancer laboratories has confirmed performance and usability with extremely positive feedback being received from Pharmaceutical, CRO, and academic customer groups.

The current optical and imaging geometry was designed using basic calculations and experimental testing. A4I investment is being sought to enable comprehensive computational modelling, characterisation, and optimisation of the optical configuration to assure reliable scaled-up manufacture of the technology. NPL has deep-rooted expertise in this area and we look forward to an energetic and productive collaboration with them.
