Grant Description

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2017 and had a single mastectomy. I'd never seen a woman with one breast and felt alone. I later learned that 15000 women a year in the UK have a mastectomy without reconstruction.

Mastectomy bras are designed for uncomfortable prosthetics and tight elastics that irritate scar tissue with an emphasis on looking 'normal' rather than comfort, confidence and health.

I designed the one-cup 'unobra' for the increasing number of women who don't want to hide or be ashamed of having had cancer. Since launching two limited edition products, the response has been overwhelming.

Featured on BBC Woman's Hour, The Guardian, The Independent, The Times and named one of the top ten fashion moments of 2023 by International design magazine Dezeen.

We have had requests from NHS Trusts up and down the country for our bras to be made available to women, post-surgery on prescription.

Unlike a normal bra, there is no tight underband elastic, but instead a broad, compression band over scar tissue to reduce swelling.

Our aim is to hone the product from cup sizes A-G, at a viable price point for NHS procurement -- without compromising on confident, asymmetric elegance. www.unobra.co.uk
