Grant Description

The energy sector is the most polluting industry in the world, accounting for more than ¾ of total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions globally.

Thus, the net zero target is unachievable without major transformations in the global energy sector, drastically increasing the share of renewables in the total energy mix, including wind energy. Kitemill is a global leading airborne wind energy (AWE) technology developer founded in 2008, based in Norway.

Currently, we are developing our first commercial system, KM2 100 kW, an emerging renewable energy technology. KM2 consists of a kite connected with a tether to a ground station.

The system offers the following advantages, compared to conventional wind: i) significantly lower CAPEX and OPEX; ii) 90% less raw materials and 90% less Critical Raw Materials used; iii) 50% lower LCOE, iv) more stable output; v) simplified installation and maintenance process; vi) most cost-efficient energy production technology over a large part of the global land area; vii) reduced CO2 footprint; viii) enable a wider range of areas suitable for wind energy; ix) greater social acceptance, hence easier to secure permits.By advancing AWE technology, Kitemill aims to reduce CO2 emissions, enhance energy security, and promote sustainable green industrialization in the EU and globally.

This EIC project will directly contribute to implementing the European Green Deal and is aligned with the Net Zero Industry Act (NZIA).

KM technology promises substantial societal, economic, environmental, and climate benefits, as it aims to deliver clean and affordable energy, especially in rapidly growing economies. addresses urgent global challenges, contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

EIC funding will de-risk the KM2 system as it will allow us to complete the riskiest development steps and demonstrate the system’s performance in an operational environment, unlocking additional private capital and boosting customer and public trust.
