Premature babies and patients with acute lung failure in the intensive care unit or COPD patients at home: they all suffer from the same potentially fatal condition: hypercapnia = an increased level of CO2 in the blood. In Europe alone there are around 1.8M people.
Hypercapnia is one of the major challenges in the therapy of acute lung failure and long-term weaning in ICU and in the outpatient treatment of COPD, which has not yet been adequately solved.
Our goal is to revolutionize therapy and significantly improve survival and, above all, the quality of life of these large patient groups suffering from hypercapnia. Instead of tackling the problem via the lungs, RESPILIQ uses the human gut as a respiratory organ. The intestine forms a highly effective exchange membrane for carbon dioxide (CO2).
In the gut, RESPILIQ can bind CO2 from the intestinal fluid and excrete it via naturalis. Administered orally or rectally, RESPILIQ initiates a life-saving reduction of pCO2 in the blood
