Grant Description

Cost driven architectural design, of modular construction and 'copy-paste' blueprints, have dehumanised internal spaces to be box-like, minimal, hard surfaced, and devoid of texture, curves and connection to nature.

Poor design of internal spaces can dampen mood and creativity of most people. However, less well represented groups, including neurodiverse (autism, ADHD), the partially sighted and the partial hearing, are far too often forgotten. They are subjected to uncomfortable internal spaces that either cause triggers or discomfort, often to sensory overload. This can be alienating for some people, which is counterproductive to diversity and inclusivity.

This project will undertake the research and development necessary to offer a holistic solution that will turn poorly designed spaces into harmonious environments for all people.

The project will design and develop a prototype demonstrator that will reduce the risk of sensory triggers, which may be caused by poor lighting, acoustics and aesthetics. The project will lead to a portfolio of cost-accessible products that are intended for installation in offices, educational settings and public spaces.
