Switchable Insulation enables thermal properties of building envelopes to be switched on & off in response to changing climatic conditions, reducing heating & cooling energy demands by 30-50%, whilst also improving thermal comfort for building occupants.
Switchable Insulation Panels (SwIPs) allow insulated walls and roofs to benefit from free solar heating in winter, and free night-time cooling in summer, by enabling insulating properties to be "switched off" whenever beneficial to do so, This helps overcome problems of buildings overheating during heatwaves and dramatically reduces heating bills on cold sunny days. SwIPs products use patented Thermal Diode technology (developed at Ulster University) to enable insulation U-values to be dynamically switched between 0.15 and 15W/m2K and can be easily controlled using industry-standard BMS devices.
This project will enable Switchable Insulation Innovations Ltd to undertake rapid business development, onboarding customers, construction industry stakeholders, and investors, to co-create and demonstrate revolutionary solutions for climate-adaptive low carbon buildings.
