On July 28, 2022, Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi announced that China would launch the "Health Express International Light Tour" in Uzbekistan, which involved providing free vision restoration operations for 500 cataract patients in Uzbekistan and setting up a blindness prevention cooperation center in Uzbekistan.
From April 10th to April 28th, 2023, a team of ophthalmology experts from Peking University People’s Hospital went to Uzbekistan to carry out the Health Express International Light Tour, which involved providing free cataract restoration surgeries to 530 local patients.
Some surgeries were performed at the Samarkand branch of Uzbekistan’s Professional Practical Medical Center for Ophthalmic Microsurgery.
The medical team was composed of seven members, including Professor Bao Yongzhen from the Department of Ophthalmology, chief physician Hou Xianru, chief physician Cao Xiaoguang, attending physician Meng Qingyu, nurse-in-charge Mei Ningjing, nurse Gao Wenjie from the Anesthesia Department, and technician Li Yi from the Medical Equipment Department.
They departed from China on April 3rd, 2023.
The Health Express International Light Tour also involved the opening of the China-Uzbekistan Cooperation Center for Blindness Prevention, which was officially unveiled at the Wuyan Microsurgery Professional Scientific and Practical Medicine Center.
