Grant Description
On November 29, 2022, the Safe Mekong Coordination Center in Taunggyi Township of Shan State was inaugurated.
The project was funded by the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Special Fund and supported by the Myanmar Police Force under the Ministry of Home Affairs. The total project cost was a total of MMK 852.77 million ($499,400).
The purpose of this project was to clamp down on drug smuggling along the Mekong River, to share information about drug trafficking, and host meetings with other Mekong countries. It is unclear when the construction of this center began.
Staff Comments
- It is unclear if the Myanmar Police Force contributed any financing for the project. For the time being, AidData has attributed the total cost of the project to the Lancang-Mekong Fund as projects under this mechanism are usually fully funded.
- The total amount pledged for 2022 projects under the Lancang-Mekong Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between China and Myanmar is unknown. This issue warrants further investigation.
