To fulfil the UK's Net-Zero targets, innovative solutions are required to decarbonise heavy industries, particularly cement production (which accounts for 7% of the global CO2 emissions).
Existing carbon capture technology solutions (e.g., amine scrubbing) suffer from have high energy usage and associated operational costs, which has hindered their wide implementation by cement producers to date.
MOF Technologies has developed a step change technology for CO2 capture by harnessing the high-capacity, selective nature of a new class of solid sorbents called metal-organic frameworks (MOFs).
MOF Technologies' CO2 filtration system captures and removes CO2 from flue gas by combining the unique properties of MOFs with mature vacuum swing technology to enable the separation of CO2 from flue gas using pressure rather than heat. This yields an ultra-energy efficient system that reduces the overall energy penalty associated with capture by up to 80%.
This reduction in energy footprint slashes the cost of capture, providing cement manufacturers with an efficient solution to achieve their decarbonisation targets whilst minimising the impact on their bottom line.
In the project, MOFT will design, construct and operate a bespoke CO2 capture a pilot plant using its unique Nuada technology tailored to cement producers to demonstrate its performance and unmatched energy efficiency under real cement flue gas streams.
