On March 25, 2022 Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Qi Zhenhong committed to provide Sri Lanka with 2000 MT of rice, valued at USD 2.5 million to assist Sri Lanka with their ongoing food crisis. Both countries would work together to ensure prompt shipment of the aid. This pledge was made following a request from Sri Lanka to the Chinese government.
1. This donation appears to be separate from CIDCA's 10,000 MT of rice donation (Project #98712) made in April and May 2022, because documents indicate this donation was made on the occasion of 70th Anniversary of the Rubber and Rice Agreement between the two countries. CIDCA's 10,000 MT of rice grant, on the other hand, is part of China's emergency humanitarian support package. However, because there is no disbursement information on the 2,000 MT of rice, AidData only assumes this is a separate donation. Further investigation is needed.
