Grant Description

SE Asian economy is majorly dependent on agriculture(as high as 60% for some countries) and most farms lack any sophisticated measurement systems.

This results in large crop losses and damage due to inadequate action undertaken by the farmer due to lack of quantitative data. The issue is that smart sensing and IoT, whilst inexpensive (&revolutionary) for vertical farming systems (as demonstrated by several companies) tends to fail in wide agricultural settings as the one-sensor one-readout approach stops working due to being extremely expensive.

Terabithia has developed one sensor multiple readouts technology which is based on well known approaches used in other sectors predominantly in the aerospace/biomedical sectors recognising that in actuality, agriculture doesn't require extremely precise data, but a general idea about the conditions and measurables.Using cheap pins as hardware(which renders IP-theft moot) and developing it for multiple readouts(using relatively rarer techniques of measurement),we plan to implement and revolutionise the outdoor agricultural market.

Using pins significantly de-risks IP loss and reduces costs, which is the major issue for extensive agriculture.Tailored GUI ensures that operators/farmers who tend to be illiterate can still be able to use it easily(pictorial approach with language support). All backend analysis and control is performed by a Terabithia server. These measurables change over time and are crop dependent which is why our partner - GW Genetics-renowned for seed development- is very useful for the developmental work as he operates in 11 countries in the region.

The feasibility study trials out what is usually a cause for major failure for most IoT based systems as they are too expensive for use in SE-Asia, and with the focus being on hardware/software which is easily copied, and being far too expensive to implement.Even small farms(1000 acres) have problems with IoT implementation as it becomes too expensive especially for measuring multiple parameters.

This is how our approach is very innovative.Using this project, we open up significant markets in Malaysia (SEAsia) and India and have rapid penetration with the support garnered from the partner. Our main focus is in extensive agriculture/open agricultural systems.Key objectives are - modify our existing vertical farming sensor system for use in large field agriculture , modify our GUI targeted for the region, build prototypes , test in the UK , ship or transport to Malaysia and test on site with our partner.

This provides large scale social and fiscal impact for both UK company and the SE Asian landowners.
