On January 6, 2022, the first stone was laid for the construction of a drinking water reservoir located in the town of Yauli, Peru.
The reservoir was financed by a grant from the Aluminum Corporation of China (Chinalco) and constructed by the Yanama Consortium.
The project is referred to as the "Creation of Reservoir of Potable Drinking Water in the Yanama Sector" in official documentation.
The reservoir will have a capacity of 150 cubic meters and will serve the neighborhoods of Agua Caliente and Santa Rosa, improving their access to potable water.
Per the public tender documents, the project was to cost about 58,892.65 Peruvian Soles, with only contract bids between 53,003.39 soles and 64,781.91 soles to be considered. However, the ultimate value of the contract and corresponding grant by Chinalco is unknown. Both public tender documents and Chinalco's news release indicated the project was to be completed in 120 days.
However -- according to posts by the Yauli Municipal District's mayor at the time -- construction was still ongoing as of May 18, 2022, 132 days after groundbreaking. Chinalco is one of the contractors for the Toromocho Mine Project, located in Yauli.
The grant for this reservoir follows other corporate social responsibility projects, such as the provision of scholarships for students in Yauli (see Record ID#).
1. The project's full, official Spanish language title is 'Creación del reservorio de agua potable en el sector de Yanama de la localidad de Yauli de distrito de Yauli - provincia de Yauli - departamento de Junín'.
