VIKELA Armour is a next generation ballistic body armour prototype utilising new materials and novel manufacturing methods, to create a body armour prototype which is lighter, more flexible and stronger than any other product on the market, allowing wearers to protect their whole body, and aims to revolutionise the global body armour marketplace, which for military procurement alone was valued at $12.02B USD in 2019\.
Current body armour is too heavy. Due to the weight it can only be used to cover the torso and because of this most injuries seen in the field are to the extremities. they are also manufactured on a one size fits all approach. This is leaving 68% of female soldiers to report wearing ill-fitting armour which caused injury or distress.
Through this project, VIKELA Armour will address the drawbacks of traditional ballistic body armour vests, which are comprised of rigid and heavy, high density, materials, causing the armour to be heavy and impairing its flexibility.
Vikela will create a new armour which can be easily adjusted to fit each user individually, promoting inclusion and reducing injuries seen by female users. The armour will also be flexible and able to cover the extremities reducing injuries seen and medical costs. By the end of the project Vikela will have developed armour which has undergone the standard certification process. this will allow Vikela to begin to licence the product and build its revenue.
