The purpose of the project is to investigate whether a biochar-based cover can effectively prevent the transport of flame retardants from contaminated sediment.
The goal of the project is to develop a method that reduces the spread of pollutants to the water phase and aquatic organisms, while the natural sedimentation gradually isolates the polluted sediments from the environment.
The project consists of a laboratory study where different materials are examined and dosage for effective coverage is developed.
A field study is designed and carried out outside Rönnskär, in Skellefteå, where a smaller area is covered according to the developed recipe and the effectiveness of the coverage is studied under real conditions, using a flux chamber. The project will last for three years.
