A Guide to International Development Funding

Bilateral Donors

Bilateral aid flows directly from one government to another, or through their development agencies. Major bilateral donors include USAID (USA), DFID/FCDO (UK), GIZ (Germany), AFD (France), JICA (Japan), and Sida (Sweden).

Multilateral Institutions

These include the World Bank Group, United Nations agencies (UNDP, UNICEF, WHO, FAO), the African Development Bank, Asian Development Bank, and the Inter-American Development Bank. They fund both governments and NGOs.

Private Foundations

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Ford Foundation, Wellcome Trust, and Open Society Foundations are among the largest private grant-makers globally, often with more flexible funding windows than governments.

Finding the Right Fit

Use GrantFunds to filter by funder, country, and category to identify which donors are actively funding in your sector. Look at historical grant patterns — if a funder has supported similar work in your region, they are a strong prospect.
